It’s always been a sign of warmer weather and nights on the lake for me, but this year is a little different. Being in the S.E. United States we are hearing two types of Cicadas; the annuals and periodicals (Brood XIX and Brood XI) are in full swing. It’s an event that only happens every 221 years. Here’s an article from UConn that is very informative.
It took me a day or so to realize that the distant ringing or alarm noise was Brood XIX. I wasn’t here 13 years ago, so it was a new sound for me. From what I saw on Facebook, it was a new sound for most in the Lake Community Groups I am a member of as well. In fact, some police have been getting noise complaint calls!
Cheers to Spring!
